What is Remote Year?
Remote Year is a travel/work program that does the planning for you while you focus on work and go on amazing culturally immersive adventures.
They have been around for 4 years and now offer 4-month and 6-month programs in addition to their year-long itineraries. Cities are predetermined according to each program and span from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
How was your experience with Remote Year?
I had an incredible Remote Year experience. I participated in a year-long program and chose to work freelance. That came with both pros and cons. But I don’t regret the decision.
What is the Remote Year Application like?
I applied online, answering a series of questions :
- Why do you want to go on Remote Year?
- Why you? What unique aspect do you bring to the table for the Remote Year community?
- What personal and professional goals would you set up for yourself while on Remote Year?
- Please describe your current role. If it will be different on Remote Year, please explain.
- Please provide any additional information you believe is important for us to know.
Then I had a video interview with one of the RY team members. Their main goal at the video interview is to get to know you and see if you’re a good fit for the program. Then I was notified that I was accepted on the program.
After being accepted, they give you a deadline to pay the deposit and help you create a presentation to convince your company to continue working for them remotely if that is what you choose to do.
What advice can you give anyone interested filling out the Remote Year Application?
Be honest and be yourself. They mainly want to see if you are a good fit and if you can feasibly complete the program and it will work with your current personal, professional, and financial situation.
Would you recommend ‘Remote Year’?
100%. It was the trip of a lifetime and a total game-changer for me. It has inspired me to want to continue exploring the rest of the world while working.
I don’t ever want to go back to my previous way of life if I can help it!
Any closing thoughts on the ‘Remote Year’ application process?
I thought it would be a lot more daunting than it was but at the end of the day they just want to get a feel for what kind of person you are and if you are going into the program with the right set of expectations.
If you are ready to take the leap and are ready challenge yourself in more ways than one, and it is a realistic transition from your current life, this program is for you and they will see that!

2nd Interview - Olga Doroshenko
• Olga works in contract renewals for a software company
• Attended Remote Year for one year
How is your experience with Remote Year?
My time at Remote Year has been like living in a dream. From the day I got off the plane to the day I met my awesome new “family”.
The events and group environment are fantastic. Everyone is welcoming and eager to help. My program leader, Corinne, is very approachable and I’ve been comfortable discussing important personal life things I’ve had to deal with during the program.
Our City Teams in each of the cities so far have offered great recommendations for food, activities, events going on in town and even more specific things like “where to host a surprise birthday party & get cake for it”.
I’ve done quite a few of the RY offered excursions which was a good way to see the cities for a person who works full time afternoons and late evenings.
Our group has taken side trips, done hikes, gone snorkeling and island hopping, anything you can think of is possible while you’re on your RY experience.
What is the Remote Year Application like?
The Remote Year application process was easy and straightforward. I reached out online to get additional information and was quickly contacted by an RY staff member.
Upon several conversations I was totally pumped about the opportunity and submitted my down payment. Following that the on-boarding team reached out and shared with me the resources I had at my fingertips to get ready for the trip!
I had access to The Premote Hub and Slack channel, resources that had tons of valuable information from documents to webinars. Slack specifically gave me an idea of who will be traveling in my group with me as well as some background and interests of those individuals.
During that process I also filled out my RY profile. The hardest part of the whole process was me having to pick which of the amazing programs to go on!
What advice can you give anyone interested filling out the Remote Year Application?
Expect to have opportunities to go on various excursions throughout the week and weekends. Be open minded and culturally sensitive, because you’re in a group of people from all over the world with various backgrounds.
Would you recommend ‘Remote Year’?

I don’t ever want to go back to my previous way of life if I can help it!
